JUNE 1941 Nineteen-year old Raisa Tarasova’s peaceful life shatters when Hitler’s forces invade Russia. Her two brothers immediately enlist in the air corps. transported to a training base.
After six hard months of schooling, Raisa is assigned as a navigator with the all-women Night Bomber Regiment.
Their aircraft is the PO-2, a biplane made of wood and fabric. Months later, after a night of heavy losses, Raisa is given a field promotion and the new responsibility of pilot. She has no choice but to carry out her orders and face down a most significant enemy…her own fear.
Courage, an impossible romance, and a daring rescue only a woman would devise become part of Raisa’s new life as a member of the 588th Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, the NIGHT WITCHES.

This book is a treasure. It has pretty much anything a reader will love. One of my 'stingy' five star ratings. A Story of a Russian girl, third year Engineering student who decides to fly as a bomber crewman, in the famous all female night bomber regiment, nicknamed by the Germans as the 'Night Witches'. It has a little of everything: A hard upbringing by her father, that made her strong, a posting as a Navigator in her unit, a 'backseater' to a Russian bomber pilot that is held in awe by her fellow pilots. She Becomes a pilot and establishes her own status as a leader. She copes with being shot down, being rescued, being captured by Germans, and even manages to escape and evade with the help of a foreign captured nurse and Russian partisan assistance.RIch Johns

This is the third book I've read about the Night Witches, and those brave Russian aviators. I'd recommend this story to anyone. The author tells a compelling story from the point of view of one of those flyers, presenting a character that is quite realistic and easy to empathize with.
This was a highly readable novel based on World War II history. A unique story about the bravery and heroism of women pilots for Russia after the invasion by Nazi Germany . Active, fast-paced writing by author S.J. McCormack with a compelling story line. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
I enjoyed this book very much! These women were amazing- so brave, so smart, so loyal to their homeland of Russia! I very recently met Sandy, the author, and she is delightful! Thanks for sharing these strong women's story with us!
The writing was so well done, it felt like I was there. The emotions felt real, the war scenes were exciting and one could picture life between flight as well as escape from the enemy.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Night Witch; at times I could not put it down! This is, by far, was one of the best books I have read in a long time! I had heard of the Tuskegee airmen during WWII and their accomplishments -- now I know of the Night Witches of WWII. The writing is beautiful in its depiction of the struggles of women drawn into a man’s role and excelling. I found myself equally fascinated by descriptions of life during the big war, drawn in through the lives of the characters in the book. It was incredibly moving, I found myself in tears, something that does not happen often! I have wholeheartedly recommended this book to several people; book clubs and I recommend it to you.
Beautifully written story of bravery, strength, courage, over coming fears, lots of action, love, friendships, and family. Seriously couldn't put the book down as the imagery in the book created a movie scene in my mind. I cheered, laughed and cried with the main character, Raisa. Definitely a must read!
This lovely book is well worth your time. I had no idea that there were female Russian pilots during World War II and only a pilot (and the author IS a pilot) could have written with such depth of feeling about flying. The writing is such that you feel that you are actually hearing a tale told by a person whose first language was Russian, who lived during that era (hard to explain, but easy to feel as you are reading) and had these experiences. It was a journey back in time, a history lesson and a good story. Hard to believe this was a first novel.
